The Punjab government has suspended seven police personnel for irresponsibly giving media interviews while gangster Lawrence Bishnoi remains in jail. This action stems from gross negligence in their duties.
Reports indicate that in 2022, a media outlet interviewed Lawrence Bishnoi while he was in CIA custody in Kharar. Authorities transferred him from Tihar Jail to Kharar CA as part of the investigation into the Sidhu Musewala murder case. Following the controversy, the Punjab and Haryana High Court mandated an SIT investigation.
The SIT conducted an investigation and uncovered that the interview occurred after Bishnoi’s transfer from Tihar Jail to the CIA in Kharar, conducted via video conferencing.
As a result, the Punjab government suspended seven employees, including Deputy Superintendent RA officers Gursher Singh and Sameer Banit, who were responsible for the incident. State Home Secretary Gurkirat Kirpal ordered the suspensions, which also affected several sub-inspectors and head constables.
