The Supreme Court will today hear the high-profile case involving the assault and murder of a medical student in Kolkata. Chief Justice D. Y. Chandrachud will lead a three-member bench for this crucial hearing.
The Court had previously requested comprehensive details about the case, which involves the assault and murder of a junior doctor and vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident has sparked nationwide protests, prompting the Supreme Court to swiftly intervene and schedule today’s hearing.

On August 9, a trainee doctor was fatally injured following an incident in a seminar hall at the hospital. A petition was filed with the Supreme Court on August 18. The hearing comes amid weeks of widespread agitation by the medical community across the country.
In related developments, Sanjay Rayar, the accused in this case, may undergo a polygraph or lie detection test today. The Calcutta High Court has authorized the CBI to conduct these tests. A five-member team from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) has arrived in Kolkata to assist in the investigation.
The autopsy report of the deceased medical student has revealed that he sustained 16 wounds on his body. The report confirms that all these injuries occurred before his death.
