Supreme Court Stays Hearing in Defamation Case Against Delhi CM Atishi and Kejriwal

The Supreme Court has stayed the hearing in the trial court regarding the defamation case against Delhi CM Atishi and former CM Arvind Kejriwal. The Rouse Avenue Court had summoned both leaders to appear on October 3 in the case filed by a BJP leader.

Recently, the Delhi High Court rejected a petition from AAP leaders seeking to quash the case, prompting Kejriwal and Atishi to appeal to the Supreme Court. BJP leader Rajiv Babbar filed the criminal defamation case against Kejriwal, Atishi, and other AAP leaders Sushil Kumar Gupta and Manoj Kumar.

Babbar accused Kejriwal and the AAP leaders of defaming the BJP. He alleged that the BJP was responsible for removing the names of 30 lakh voters from Delhi’s voter list, primarily affecting people from the Bania, Muslim, and other communities. In February 2020, the High Court had already stayed the proceedings in the defamation case against Kejriwal and other AAP leaders.
