In Jharpada Jail, attackers targeted undertrial prisoner Soumyakant Mohanty, raising serious safety concerns. Allegations point to the involvement of jail officials. ADG Amitabh Thakur has responded by ordering a full investigation, placing Cuttack Division DIG Anusaya Jena in charge.
DIG Jena will visit Jharpada Jail to thoroughly investigate the incident and uncover the circumstances behind it. Reports directly accuse gangster Hyder’s son, Muna, and his associates, also undertrial prisoners, of brutally assaulting Soumyakant Mohanty.
Days before the attack, Soumyakant had alerted the Bhubaneswar District Law Service Authority (DLSA) about corruption within the jail. He exposed the sale of marijuana-filled beads for Rs. 2,000 and revealed that inmates were being forced to pay extra for better accommodations, telephone access, and other privileges.
Reacting swiftly, the DLSA raided the jail last Saturday, seizing mobile phones and drug paraphernalia, which they handed over to the Laxmi Sagar police. The very next day, assailants attacked Soumyakant. He has since identified Muna and his associates as the perpetrators. Soumyakant is currently receiving treatment for severe head injuries.
ADG Amitabh Thakur has demanded a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable and to address the growing safety concerns within Jharpada Jail.
